Breed Characteristics


  • Ancient Times - Draft-like
  • Modern Times - Lightening into more warm-blood type
  • 3 Types Today  (Judges should not be biased as to type as long as the horse has good conformation and movement.)
    - Light ("Sport Horse" or "Luxury Horse")
    - Medium ("Classic")
    - Heavy ("Baroque")
  • Height - 15.1 (155 cm)- 16.1 (165 cm) - typically, and trending to the taller range
  • Minimum Requirements as per FHANA (North American representative of the FPS)
Studbook Mare/Gelding 150cm 14.3 hands
Star Mare/Star Gelding 155cm 15.1 hands
Model Mare or 3 yr old approved stallion 158cm 15.21/2 hands
4 yr old approved stallion 160cm 15.3 hands
  • Neck - Upright and Crested, Graceful arch and narrow throat latch
  • Head - More refined then other draft breeds
  • Ears - Small and Alert, tips point slightly inward
  • Eyes - Kind gentle eye
  • Body - Compact, strong, good bone in legs, strong/clean joints
  • Withers - Mostly rounded
  • Shoulder - Long and sloping
  • Hooves - Strong and Solid
  • Hair - Famous for long, flowing mane and tail, wavy and sometimes curly.
    - Fetlock - abundance of hair called "feathers"
  • Color - Black only today. White on forehead is acceptable. Other white is not permitted in registry. Chestnut gene which throws red is still carried but no longer allowed in breeding stallions.
  • Temperment - Kind, people oriented, friendly, willing, loyal, gentle, "heart" quality
  • Movement - Natural Trotters, Powerful Trots. Canter is natural in some and not others.

    - Forward Reaching Action
  • Disciplines
    - Driving, Dressage, Trail, Side-Saddle, Vaulting, Therapeutic, Theatrical Events, Quadrille
